Advanced Education Program in General Dentistry

The Advanced Education Program in General Dentistry at Howard University is a one year postdoctoral education program which offers the dentist an opportunity for advanced comprehensive clinical experience in a variety of settings.  In addition, the trainee receives postdoctoral training in the sciences basic to dental practice. This program is designed to increase the resident's knowledge of oral and systemic interrelationships and manifestations in healthy individuals and, also, in those with abnormalities and diseases; to broaden clinical experiences; and to further prepare the trainee in the management of the total oral health of a wide range of ambulatory, non-ambulatory and medically compromised patients.  Training is provided in all phases of general dentistry including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, operative/restorative dentistry, endodontics, fixed prosthodontics, removable prosthodontics, implantology, oral surgery, oral medicine, oral pathology, patient management, practice management, conscious sedation, and risk management. The curriculum includes weekly treatment planning conferences, monthly literature review/journal club meetings, seminar topics in general dentistry, principles of peer review, as well as participation in formal course work/classes with other postdoctoral residents in the College of Dentistry. Service assignments and rotations include oral surgery, anesthesiology, pediatric dentistry, orthodontics and a community outreach clinic to supplement the emphasized comprehensive dentistry in the AEGD Clinic.  Additionally, regular lunch and learn seminars and breakfast club seminars are scheduled to enhanced our program. Teaching resources include generalists and specialists from various departments to deliver comprehensive care for a large and diverse patient population.

Accreditation Status - Approval without reporting requirements. 

Number of Positions - A maximum of five residents (budget dependent)Tuition-Salary/Stipend - There are tuition and fees associated with our program, however, residents receive a salary/stipend that is regionally competitive.

Admission Requirements - an applicant:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited dental school;
  • Must have passed Part I and Part II of the National Dental Boards;
  • Must be eligible for dental licensure in the District of Columbia;
  • Must possess at least a 3.0 average in dental school;
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in the English language and mastery of concepts of procedures, which are basic to the practice of dentistry, if the applicant possesses a foreign dental degree.
