Periodontics
Periodontics is that branch of dentistry dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth and their substitutes. The goals of modern periodontal therapy are to preserve and maintain periodontal health, esthetics and function of the natural dentition and implanted tooth replacements.
The mission of the periodontal department here at Howard University College of Dentistry is to graduate students who upon entrance into the practice of general dentistry will be proficient in the diagnosis of periodontal diseases and capable of treating these diseases according to the standards set forth by the profession.
The goals of the department are:

To achieve the highest levels of student proficiency in examination, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment planning of patients with periodontal disease.

To enhance the student's skill in performing scaling and root planning.

To develop the student's competency in performing surgery for access and crown lengthening.

To introduce the student to new clinical procedures and techniques.

To enhance the student's preparedness to take and pass national and regional board examinations.

To provide the student with clinical exposure to implant dentistry.
