Summer Externship Program Activities

The Summer Externship Program at the Howard University College of Dentistry is a program to expose college students interested in pursuing careers in dentistry to the dental school curriculum.  Along with a n introduction to the Program staff and various university activities, t he Summer Externship Program will include:  an overview of the freshman year in dental school; hands on laboratory experiences; opportunities to shadow dental students in the clinical setting; and seminars in Time Management and Test Taking Skills.  The ultimate goal of Summer Externship is to enhance the desire for dentistry in all participants in the program.

Basic Science Courses

During the Summer Externship, Participants will attend in the following basic science courses:  Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Histology, Microbiology, and Laboratory Techniques in Operative Dentistry.

Shadow Dental Students

Participants will be assigned to a senior dental student to observe the student’s application of didactic and clinical skills in the treatment of patients.

Time Management Workshops

A representative from the Howard University Careers Center will present workshops on Time Management and Test Taking skills.  These Workshops are designed to strengthen participants’ test-taking abilities, and enhance time management skills in ways that will promote success in the professional school environment.
